Award-winning blues rock star, guitar hero and singer-songwriter Joe Bonamassa and his ace touring band will perform in concert at the Missouri Theatre Center for the Arts in Columbia Missouri on August 20, 2009. The one-night-only show is in support of his new album The Ballad Of John Henry, released on Bonamassa’s J&R Adventures label in March of 2009. The ninth full-length solo release and seventh studio album of his career, the disc marks Bonamassa’s third collaboration with Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Black Crowes, Aerosmith) as producer. Bonamassa says of the album – which finds him opening up personally more than ever before and showcases his growth as a powerful vocalist as well as a master guitarist – “I feel this is my strongest work to date.”

In 2008, Bonamassa released a 2-CD live set From Nowhere In Particular, which captures the intensity and excitement of the live performances for which the artist is celebrated worldwide. The U.K. publication Guitarist wrote of the live release, “For all-out invention, frenetic fret-tickling & truly enormous tone, look no further than Bonamassa.” Almost always playing to sold-out and ever-larger houses, Bonamassa – who perform an average of 200 shows a year – regularly draws accolades for his live musicianship.

The Washington Post’s Mike Joyce cites his, “Wicked guitar thrills.” British journalist Pete Feenstra wrote of a BBC Live performance, that, “he is both as eloquent and learned about the music he plays as he is technically brilliant.” Guitar icon Ted Nugent has said, “This kid deserves to be in the same class with Stevie Ray F*&cking Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck.” British Beatles promoter Sam Leach compared the first time he saw him to his initial glimpse of the Fab Four– “I got that same feeling of excitement…Joe is the premiere Blues/Rock artist on the planet.”

Remarkably, Bonamassa’s 2009 tour and the The Ballad Of John Henry coincides his twentieth year a professional musician. A child prodigy, Bonamassa opened shows at age 12 for blues legend B.B. King, who said after first seeing him play, “This kid's potential is unbelievable…He's one of a kind.” Bonamassa’s recording career began in the early ’90s with Bloodlines, a rock-blues group also featuring Robby Krieger’s son Waylon and Miles Davis’ son Erin. His solo debut was in 2000 with the Tom Dowd-produced A New Day Yesterday, named for the Jethro Tull hit that Bonamassa delivers with what allmusic.com calls, “a jaw-dropping performance.”

Prior to The Ballad Of John Henry, Bonamassa’s last studio album was 2007’s Sloe Gin, which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s blues chart, received a 2008 nomination for Album Of The Year from the U.K.’s prestigious Classic Rock Roll Of Honour Awards and drew praise including the Boston Phoenix’s comment that it was, “an elegant and brawny guitar-hero album.” Also in ’08, Bonamassa was named “Best Blues Guitarist” in Guitar Player’s readers’ choice poll for the second consecutive year, and Blues Wax’s “Artist of the Year” for an unprecedented third time. He was also honored with the issuing of the “Inspired By Joe Bonamassa” Aged Les Paul Goldtop” from Gibson Custom; just 300 of the limited edition guitars, valued at $6,000 each, were made, and are almost sold out.

As he heads back to the road in support of his new album, Bonamassa remains infinitely passionate about playing live and connecting with his audiences, something evident in comments like Paul Roy’s for the recurring Blues Bash feature on blogcritics.org: “Joe is not only one of the world's best guitar players, but he is also one of the most charismatic and down to earth performers in the business…I would get out and see this guy the first chance you get.”
