Robert A. Harris of the Film Preserve supervised the restorations under the direction of Coppola, with extensive consultation from cinematographer Gordon Willis.

The first two installments of The Godfather triumvirate are some of the most celebrated works of American cinema, yet the majority of its admirers who first experienced, and continue to revisit, the films on DVD and cable have been treated to insufficiently transferred version, which have dimmed and softened from poor treatment.

Harris’ skilled team of artist-technicians has achieved the closest approximation of the genuine article within their means, rejuvenating the original color and enhancing the visual details to best resemble the original prints. The new editions of Coppola’s masterworks have revived Willis’ golden glow, while improving the range of his shadowy palette that beautifully renders the feel for clannish insularity in the Corleones’ post-war America.

The Ragtag Cinema’s Missouri Theatre Film Series is pleased to present an exclusive screening of The Godfather, Part II: The Coppola Restoration in a new 35mm print, January 23 at 8:00pm. Featuring a special musical guest and complimentary wine from Glazer’s.
It’s called Menopause The Musical Out Loud™: Breaking the Silence of Ovarian Cancer!, presented by the Jeanie C. Linders Fund. The musical is a spirited celebration of real women during an unsettling time in their lives called The Change! Menopause The Musical Out Loud™ brings together four women (Professional Woman, Earth Mother, Soap Star and Iowa Housewife) at a department store lingerie sale. These ladies have nothing in common but a black lace bra and hot flashes, night sweats, memory loss, chocolate binges, not enough sex, too much sex, plastic surgery and more! Menopause The Musical Out Loud™ joyfully and hilariously parodies over two dozen of the classic “baby boomer” songs of the ‘60s and ‘70s. The focus of the Out Loud tour is to increase awareness of the medical, social and emotional issues faced by millions of women battling ovarian cancer and to educate others about the disease. For a night of hysterical laughter, gather your friends and come to the show!
When trumpeter Thad Jones and drummer Mel Lewis, two veteran New York musicians, joined forces in 1965 to form their co-led, namesake orchestra, no one could have known that some 43 years later the group would, in essence, still be together and stand as one of jazz’s great institutions. What began as a “one-off” Monday night club date in the mid-60s at jazz’s most revered basement – The Village Vanguard – has never stopped and in fact continues to this day.

Understandably there have been many changes – in leaders, in personnel, even in the music – but the band’s original intent, its spirit and some of the original charts remain ever-present. Jones, a magnificent trumpeter and composer of such now-standards as “A Child is Born,” eventually left the band and unfortunately passed away in 1986. Lewis carried the torch under his own name until he passed away in 1990.

At that time the choice for the musician-members of the band was clear: Stay together and continue to play as they always had – every very Monday night at the Vanguard. What was also equally obvious to the members of the 16-piece ensemble was that with the two co-founders having passed away the group should alter their name in such a way to genuinely reflect their Monday night home base these oh-so-many years. Thus, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra was hatched and now, Grammy nominations and decades later, the group sounds better then ever and not only plays “the basement,” but also tours across the country and all over the world.

From its 1965 inception this was an ensemble comprised of session players, sidemen, leaders-to-be, accomplished composers and arrangers – a melded rotating cast of native New Yorkers and those who had gravitated to the Big Apple. Among the first edition of players was the talented valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer.

From the outset the Kansas City native contributed charts to the band’s repertoire as well as performing with the group. After a few years Brookmeyer left to pursue his own career, however upon Lewis’ request once Jones had departed, he returned and served as musical director for a time – until he left permanently to continue on his own projects.

Nonetheless the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra – regardless of incarnation – continued to explore several Brookmeyer charts – something that it does to this day.

Brookmeyer, now 79, has become one of jazz’s most well-respected composers and arrangers, contributing a lifetime of music to the modern jazz lexicon. In 2006 he received the nation’s highest honor in the field – and was named as an NEA Jazz Master, one of only 106 artists and advocates, to date, to receive such a designation. Similarly, the “We Always Swing” Jazz Series was nominated and selected to become an NEA Jazz Masters “Host Site,” a recognition that is given at the rate of roughly one per state.

In late 2007 the NEA announced its newest initiative: Jazz Masters Live, affording designated organizations to conceive and apply for an in-depth program presentation. The Jazz Series had the idea to commission Brookmeyer to compose a new work for his old unit, now known as the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. We decided what better way to celebrate NEA Jazz Master Brookmeyer then have him return to his native Missouri to conduct the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and present his new piece as a world premiere, part of an evening concert that will also include some of his earlier works along with a variety of other selections.

Further, because of the historical significance and evolution of the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra that ultimately became the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra we also wanted to invite Dan Morgenstern, a 2007 NEA Jazz Master designate. Why not use this occasion and have the Director of the Jazz Institute at Rutgers University and one of the world’s most respected jazz historians serve as guest host and emcee of the proceedings and hold the event then at the newly restored Missouri Theatre Center for the Arts as part of MU Arts & Science Week?

To take full advantage of Mr. Morgenstern’s historical inclinations and acumen, the day before the world premiere and concert, we have asked him moderate a pair of intriguing forums. First Mr. Morgenstern will conduct a one-on-one interview with Mr. Brookmeyer as the two men discuss the composer’s lifetime of contribution to jazz.

Additionally, Mr. Morgenstern who, as he notes, “I was there in the beginning,” referring to the initial performances of the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, will offer an historical perspective of the organization’s continuum from 1965 to the present. Both forums, similarly part of MU’s Arts & Science Week, will take place on Tuesday, February 17, 2009, and will be free and open to the public.
As for the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, it’s what’s known in jazz as “loaded” – as in the talent pool. Top to bottom, VJO has maintained a consistency of personnel – with the same philosophical bent as when it started more then four decades ago as the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra. A number of the players have been with the band for long stretches of time, which has made for a seamless evolution. The repertoire, as one might imagine, is beyond extensive at this point. Selections include both original work and poignant and one-of-a-kind arrangements and readings of some of jazz’s storied compositions.

This concert has all the makings as one of the best nights ever for the Jazz Series, and surely should not be missed!
Over the course of a few years and lineup changes, The Cardinals recorded three albums, Cold Roses, Jacksonville City Nights, and Follow the Lights, as well as appearing on Adams' solo release Easy Tiger. 2008 was a landmark year for Joan Baez, marking 50 years since she began her legendary residency at Boston's famed Club 47. She remains a musical force of nature whose influence is incalculable - marching on the front line of the civil rights movement with Martin Luther King Jr., inspiring Vaclav Havel in his fight for a Czech Republic, singing on the first Amnesty International tour and just this year, standing alongside Nelson Mandela when the world celebrated his 90th birthday in London's Hyde Park. She brought the Free Speech Movement into the spotlight, took to the fields with Cesar Chavez, organized resistance to the war in Southeast Asia, then forty years later saluted the Dixie Chicks for their courage to protest war. Her earliest recordings fed a host of traditional ballads into the rock vernacular, before she unselfconsciously introduced Bob Dylan to the world in 1963. Her latest record, Day After Tomorrow, her first studio album in five years, is a collection of songs that reflects the momentous times in which Joan finds herself these days.
The motto printed on all of its 78-inch, LP and now CD releases is “The finest in jazz since 1939.” That was the year Alfred Lion launched Blue Note Records, which remains jazz’s most storied label today. In fact, in June, the Jazz Journalists Association – an industry-peer body – named it as the 2008 “Label of the Year.”
Lion was soon joined by Francis Wolff, a photographer by trade who caught the last boat out of Nazi-controlled Germany bound for the United States. For 30 years the two recorded and documented the best jazz had to offer. Everything Blue Note Records produced – from the record covers to the lettering and graphics to the recordings themselves
was immediately identifiable – and often imitated.
The independent company's "clients list" included Fats Navarro, Bud Powell, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, Herbie Hancock, Grant Green Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, Eric Dolphy, Clifford Brown, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Horace Silver, Joe Henderson, Lou Donaldson, Kenny Dorham, Cannonball Adderley, and many, many others. To this day Blue Note Records' catalog features a core list of "must-have-if-trapped-on-a-desert-island" releases that separately and cumulatively have signaled an indelible method to marking the history of modern jazz. It's a tradition that continues today. On the occasion of Blue Note Records' 70th anniversary and as a way to celebrate the label's birthday seven of today's most talented artists agreed to come together and give their all to the effort. As a result, a new recording is in place that will be released fall 2008. A major cross-country 50-date tour begins in January 2009. Both the recording and the tour reflect upon the label's tradition as the participants pay homage to the many jazz icons who preceded them. The "We Always Swing" Jazz Series is pleased to participate in what will no doubt be a significant, enjoyable and entertaining performance set in the Missouri Theatre Center for the Arts. The festivities are further highlighted as each of the seven musicians has performed previously – on separate occasions – as part of the "We Always Swing" Jazz Series. The impeccable septet includes Bill Charlap as pianist and music director, tenor saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, alto and soprano saxophonist and flutist Steve Wilson, trumpeter Nicholas Payton, guitarist Peter Bernstein, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Lewis Nash. Come hear these seven men interpret some of the genre's classic compositions originally created and recorded by the likes of Bobby Hutcherson, McCoy Tyner, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, Cedar Walton, Joe Henderson an d others. The Blue Note Records "70th Anniversary Tour" – surely a highlight of the 2008/2009 Jazz Series, surely a night not to be missed, surely a night to remember!
